Summer Skincare 101
As summer heats up, protecting your baby's delicate skin becomes a top priority. Keep your baby safe, comfortable, and happy all summer long.
- Stay Hydrated
- Ensure your baby drinks plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Use sunscreen
- Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free sunscreens with broad-spectrum that offer both UVA and UVB protection with a minimum SPF of 30 are recommended. Consult your pediatrician before using any sunscreen on your baby.
- The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends waiting until the baby is 6 months old before introducing sunscreen. The FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend keeping newborns and babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight.
- Dress Appropriately
- Choose lightweight, breathable, and loose-fitting clothes.
- Use hats and sunglasses for extra protection.
- Avoid Peak Sun Hours
- Stay indoors between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is strongest.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) discourages prolonged outdoor exposure when the heat index hits 90 degrees Fahrenheit and higher.
- Keep Cool
- Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature. Do not place the fan directly on the baby and should be out of the baby's reach at all times.
- Give your baby cool baths to help them stay cool.
- Moisturize
- Apply a gentle, hypoallergenic moisturizer to keep their skin soft. If your baby is under one year or has extra sensitive skin, avoid products made for older children or adults.
- Monitor for Signs of Overheating
- Watch for signs like excessive sweating, irritability, and flushed skin.
- Seek shade or cool areas immediately if overheating occurs.
- When in doubt, see a doctor
- Gentle Cleansing
- Bathe your baby daily with lukewarm water and mild soap to remove sweat and impurities.
- Avoid overbathing
